Before the first class

• Read the course overview and prerequisites.
• Review the reading map.
• Make sure you can build and test a medium-size project in at least one mainstream object-oriented language.
• Install a recent JDK or equivalent language toolchain, Git, and an IDE with refactoring support.
• Students planning an automation-heavy research project should also have Python 3.11+ available.

Research project preparation

Project topics may involve design pattern detection, smell detection, refactoring recommendation, search-based refactoring, program transformation, repository mining, or AI-assisted design. See Topic Families.
